Internet Explorer - Exporting and Importing Bookmarks

This article explains how to export and import bookmarks (Favorites) using Internet Explorer.  

NOTE: Make sure you save the file in a safe place such as your home drive (H:) or a flash drive.  In the video the file is saved to the desktop only for demonstration purposes.

Text-based Insturctions

Export:

  1. Launch Internet Explorer
  2. Open the Favorites Menu
    • In Internet Explorer 9/10, it is the star in the upper-right between the home and settings buttons.
    • In Internet Explorer 7/8, it is to the left of the address bar or above the row of tabs on the left.
  3. To the right of Add to Favorites, click the down arrow to open the menu.
  4. Choose "Import and export"...
  5. Choose Export to a file, click Next
  6. Check off Favorites and click Next
  7. Make sure the top level folder "Favorites" is selected, click Next
  8.  Choose the location you wish to save the file, click Save
    • Note: It is recommended that you include the date and "ie" in the file name so you know what browser they belong to later on.
    • Note: Make sure you save the file in a safe location such as your home drive (H:) or a flash drive (not your desktop).
  9. Click Export
  10. Click Finish.
  11. The file should now be located where you saved it.  You can open it to view the contents to verify your bookmarks are there.

Import:

  1. Launch Internet Explorer
  2. Open the Favorites Menu
    • In Internet Explorer 9/10, it is the star in the upper-right between the home and settings buttons.
    • In Internet Explorer 7/8, it is to the left of the address bar or above the row of tabs on the left.
  3. To the right of Add to Favorites, click the down arrow to open the menu.
  4. Choose "Import and export"...
  5. Select "Import from a file" and click Next
  6. Check off Favorites and click Next
  7. Click Browser and then browse to the location of the Favorites file you saved for Internet Explorer, select the file and click Open
  8. Click Next
  9. Make sure the top level "Favorites" is selected and click Import
  10. Click Finish.
  11. You should now see all of your favorites back in the favorites menu.
